Heritage of Mech Kingdom

History: The proposed Bodoland area and the present Assam State along with its surrounding areas were dominated by the absolute majority of the Mech (Bodo) people as well as historically ruled by the Mech (Bodo) kings. Thousands of years before the Mahabharata era, most of undivided India were ruled by Mech Kings. Chikra Mech alias Chikna Narayan Dev or Chiknath Narayan Mech was the founder king of this territory.

Chikra Mech had established the historical Mech (Bodo) kingdom in the Chiknajhar area of the Kokrajhar which is still a golden heritage location. Not only Chikra Mech, even the Rangpur princely province located in Bangladesh was ruled by the historically renowned Mech King Mahirangaa Danav, who was also popularly known as Maayrong Raja Mahirangaa.

The present Koch Behar and its distinguished royal state was also ruled by Naranarayan and Chilaray whose grandfather was Haowriya Mech, while on the other hand Dambaru Mech was their forefather who belonged to the historical Mech Royal dynasty. Kumar Prithviraj Narayan Dev Mech, the 19th royal descendant of the Bodo King Chikra Mech also said that the recall of the heritage and historical identity of an ethnic tribe or community is a must for better survival of the community as a whole.

Words by The president of the Royal Union of Koch Mech (RUKM), Prithviraj Narayan Dev Mech

Kachari Male and Female (Early photograph by DR.Simpson)

History: The Kacharis, called by Mr. Hodgon as Bodo, are diffused throughout a very wide extent of country. It appears certain that they were at one time the dominant race in the upper valley of the Brahmaputra, but though they overran a country pre-occupied by Aryans, and many of them adopted the religion and languages of the more civilized race with whom they thus came contact, their physiognomy to this day shows that they have, as a rule, managed to retain their purity of blood, and their northern physical traits have not, like those of the Ahom, been obliterated or modified by intermixture with the Aryan people.

10 Reasons Whys Bodos Need Bodoland

10 . Extinction of Tribal People in Assam

Since back in mid of 1500-1900s, Bodos have been living a tribal life in forest land areas. Education and Modernization were in the utmost backward condition. In the mids of 15-16 Century, Srimahanta Sankardev has almost turn Bodo Tribe into Saraniyas and Assamese. Only a small number of people have acquired education by the Britisher Influence by the mids of 1900 Century.  By then those who acquired education and knowledge had made Renaissance among Bodos and thus understood that their tribes are in the path of Extinction. So, to protect and preserve the Culture today Bodos are in need of Bodoland.

9. Illegal Migration in the Tribal Belt Areas

In the early 1960s the Plains Tribals Council of Assam (PTCA), a political party representing Bodos and other plains tribals of Assam realized that tribal belts  and blocks were gradually being acquired by rich landlords or new immigrants through illegal means. By 1971, the effect of Bangladesh partition as East Pakistan have made the tribal peoples in Assam breathing by a narrow pipe.

8. Lack of Education between Tribal Peoples in Assam

Education was the major problem between the tribal peoples in Assam, no schools and colleges can be found in the Tribal Belt and Block Areas.
Which made major Economic and Socio Development problem among the Tribal People.

7. Lack of Infrastructure

There were hardly any roads and other infrastructures that connected Bodo dominated area to the main cities of Assam. Bridges were nowhere, many peoples have to cross big rivers and lake by boat. In the Season of Monsoon, the trade and communication totally vanish among the Bodo People.

6. Lacking behind Socio-Politics

By the end of the 1970s, it became clear that Bodos had a little or no influence in the Indian political process. Specifically, in Assam Bodos areas were very much neglected.
Often the financial packages meant for tribal-development were diverted and misused by the Assamese Government.

5. Right to Freedom dominates the Right to Equality of Bodos.

In the name of Freedom of Speech, Assamese people have been Neglecting and discriminating Bodo Peoples. Saying "Pig Eaters" because most of the Assamese People become Brahmins those who don't eat meat literally Vegetarian and in a different way of discrimination like Racist, Untouchability, and Equality of opportunity in matters of Employment, etc.

4. No Right to Freedom for Bodos

When it comes to Right to Freedom, Bodos started their movement by the Freedom of Speech for Right to Equality and Against Exploitation many peoples were beaten up and even kill to Death by the
state Police.

3. Censor Bodo culture to the Rest of the World

The culture of the Bodos is one of the most diverse cultures in the world, which the make a sense of beauty and amazing living style whether you talk about Foods, Clothes, Dance, Language,Religion etc. Those Cultural beauties of Bodos are being represented as the Assamese Culture to other Countries sometimes In the name of Bodo they represent their Culture to other countries of the world.

2. Bodos are term as Militants.

Due to the negligence of Right to Freedom(see Number 4), Although Gun is notSolutionution, Many of the Bodo Youths take Guns in their Hands with Unique Identity Name. But Assamese Media who term those Extremist Groups as Bodo Militants in every Newspaper, Blogs, TV Channels etc.

1. Political Conspiracy of Assam Govt to hate Bodos

By the time when Bodos step into Politics as the newcomer in Political World, Intelectual Assamese people started playing major traffic game of Riots and Communal Clash among Bodos and other tribes living in the Tribal Areas of Assam to bring the diversity among tribal people of Assam and other caste. Which makes Bodo political Leaders a major problem to bring the hands of other communities.

Places to visit Seasonal Festival in Bodoland

From the ancient time Bodos have been observing their own Cultural festivals like Maghw domasi, Rongjali Bwisagu, Kerai Fwrbw and Bathou Puja. Many of these festivals are found less interested due to western culture influence like the Durga puja, Diwali, and Christmas. Although Bodo's main religion is Bathou, people adopt different western religions by their influence. Some of them have already forgotten what festivals are celebrated during which season and for what reason. Some even hesitate to visit as their priest avoid them to visit other festivals. Since then many places are found less interested or can say practice only a little. We have many major towns here in Bodoland like Kokrajhar, Kajalgaon, Bijni, Rupohi, Simla, Mushalpur, Tamulpur, and Udalguri as well only a few number those town regions are found observing.

2. Bathou Puja in Mushalpur,Baksa

Bathou means Submerged Five "Ba" means Five and "Thou" means Deep or Submerged, which Bodos actually signifies the deep meaning of Five literally. It's the worshiping festival of mother nature where they worship the five elements of the Universe Land(HAA), Water(Dwi), Air(BAR), Fire(ORR) and Space(Okwrang).
On this festival many people sacrifices Pigeons and Goats etc gradually this system has turned to just fruits, flowers, and local home wine offering.
Alright, all those are the practice task of Bathou puja. You can find the biggest festival of Bathou puja in Mushalpur by the mids of January which I came to know by the year 2013.

1. Bwisagu in Bijni,Chirang

Rongjali Bwisagu is one of the major festivals of Bodo people. It is celebrated during the mids of April-May as the New Year Festival because all the living things like plants start forming new leaves, the cuckoo bird found singing COO-KOO, And many mother Nature things are found newly formed. That's why many peoples in India including the indigenous tribe of Assam the great Bodos are found celebrating New Year in this Season.
Here in the Bodoland especially in Bijni and Mushalpur Area region you will find peoples observing with peace and harmony. On the beginning of the first day they shower their cattle and pray for their cattle that they could work hard for the new upcoming year and make huge resource also Cowboys and Cattle get to rest on that day. After that day children are put forward to pray their parents as the parents serve as the GOD of the children and therefore many co-curricular activities and Sports competitions are observe within the society. Many teenagers are found enjoying traditional dances and song to other neighbor house and even colonies to entertain them as they believe everybody should welcome the new year with joy and happiness those traditions are called "DAMSI Mwsanai".
Luckily people here in Bijni are extra interest as they organize a Bwisagu event with Outdoor Dance(Langdang Mwsanai) and Stage Event with Musical Nights for 2 consecutive days in every Village.
People like me get overwhelming with the Rice Beer with Pork Fried, Fried Fruit Eating Ants Eggs and enjoy in every Bwisagu Events for the whole month. :D
